Olga Askolina — portrait

Olga Askolina is a filmmaker, artist, and creative director working across cinema, artificial intelligence, and contemporary art. Her perspective was shaped by emigration and years of living across Central and Southeast Asia. Her work returns, again and again, to the beauty of a fragile world — the fleeting, easily missed details from which, she believes, life is assembled.

She moves between film, video art, and immersive experience, working hands-on across the whole process — directing, shooting, editing, and generating video, photos, scenarios, and experiences. She was the sole AI artist and editor on a 45-minute AI film — a rare length for the medium — created in collaboration with artist Maja Smrekar and produced by the British organization A/political, and developed a video work for an exhibition at Shedhalle, Zurich. An earlier film on blind perception, shot without a lens, has been nominated at several festivals. She directed an international project for Levi's, a collaboration with musicians bridging music, film, and fashion, and produced moving collages of paintings on LED screens for Manizha's performance at Eurovision 2021. As a creative director, director, and producer, she has delivered dozens of commercial, fashion, and art projects.

She studied theatre at the Moscow Art Theatre School and graduated from the Moscow Film School as a film producer. While still at university, she co-founded and ran a video production studio for three and a half years, working with global agencies, until it closed in 2022 with the outbreak of war. Alongside her film and art practice she works in brand strategy and creative direction — developing concepts, visual identities, and immersive experiences for international brands — and co-founded a consulting studio whose clients have included the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank.

She is a speaker, lecturer, and collaborator for educational, social, business, and art projects. She explores and talks about technology and art, the use of artificial intelligence in cinema, new media, and new culture — everything connected to our creativity, the impact of technology on humans and of humans on technology, and the art, projects, and business that live at the intersection of these themes.

She is currently traveling by motorbike through northern Vietnam, developing new moving-image work and moving toward deeper, authorial projects at the intersection of art institutions, emerging technology, and the culture of places.
